Newborn Sessions

Don't you wish you could sleep all day?

Traditionally, moms don’t often find themselves trekking to the nearest studio until their baby approaches 3 months.  Why miss out on the milestones before then?  Newborn photography sessions are photographed during the two weeks following birth.  Babies sleep so deeply during the first 10-14 days of their lives that photographers can utilize creative posing and adorable props for completely unique images.

When to book your newborn’s session:

Now.  Okay, maybe you have a little time but you should look to book your session as soon as you enter your second trimester.  Newborn sessions are only done for babies less than ten days old so timing is critical.  When you book your session, I’ll enter your tentative due date in my calendar and keep it cleared in case your baby arrives early or takes his/her sweet time.  Don’t wait until the last minute as all sessions are booked on a first come-first serve basis.

What to expect during your newborn’s session:

Newborn sessions can take place anywhere; a grassy field or maybe the beach during the early morning hours.   Most moms feel more comfortable having the session in the comfort of their own home.  You never have to change out of your pajamas.  You can can take advantage of that time by catching up with a well-deserved nap while I work with your child.  Newborn sessions require a lot of patience and a quiet atmosphere so plan on clearing a 3 hour block of time.  Babies are born with personality.  Some newborns are sleepers who slumber away nonstop while some newborns are a little more active and need more coaxing.

Newborns may have only spent a few days on the outside but they’ve already learned to sense when you’re nearby.  Some babies may not be able to settle down if they can hear or smell mommy nearby, they just want you.  I may ask you to step away to see if that is what is keeping baby from falling asleep.   Feel free to use that time to relax or eat breakfast.  But you’re welcome to stay and watch the whole session.   Cameras are not allowed during the session.  They’re distracting and redundant since you’ve hired a professional to do that for you.

Clothing is a tough choice.  Those cute outfits tend to hang on small little newborns.  Bring outfits of your choosing but avoid putting clothes with tight elastic that might leave marks or indentations on your baby’s skin.  The best pictures are those that aren’t dated by clothing so a lot of poses will feature your baby in the buff, modestly of course.  If you have air conditioning, turn it off an hour before the session.  I want to keep baby comfy and warm.

Try to plan so that you feed your baby a big meal right before the session, preferable right around nap time.  If your child has a pacifier, bring it as well.  Warm baby plus full stomach=naptime!!!

Adding parents or siblings:

Your session fee covers only the newborn but you can also customize your session if you wish to add on individuals.  Pictures of a mom or dad holding their brand-new baby are sweet momentos of these early days.  Clothing suggestion is to wear solid white or black tops and to avoid wearing jewelry.  The feel of newborn sessions is simple and natural.

I don’t always advise adding siblings.  The dynamics of young children may be too much overwhelming  for newborns.  It can be very difficult to get the shot you’re looking for in a limited timeframe.  I’m always willing to try though.
